The Northwest Pacific is a highly dynamic system with marked latitudinal gradients of environmental conditions.

Kaile was intrigued about the influence of these gradients on the phenotypic and genetic diversity of marine primary producers, particularly seaweeds. She found that such gradients shape geographic differentiation and low genetic diversity of morphologically similar Ulva species.
